You had WHAT for dinner??
If your English friend invites you for a meal and on the menu is Toad in the Hole, should you politely refuse the invitation?
Don’t worry; many traditional English dishes have very weird names, so if you come across any of the following, you need to know what they are:
Toad in the hole: a strange name, but this is only sausages in batter (batter is like a pancake mix of milk/water and flour). A toad is like a large frog.
Bubble and squeak: this tastes better than it sounds – left over vegetables (usually cabbage) mixed with mashed potatoes and fried.
Bangers and mash: a good, simple, cheap meal – sausages and mashed potato. A favourite student meal, usually eaten with baked beans.
Spuds: slang for potatoes.
Ploughman’s lunch: a typical pub meal of bread, cheese and pickle, usually accompanied by a pint of beer.
A full English (breakfast): not to be missed! This should include all of the following ingredients: fried eggs, sausage, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, fried bread, baked beans. Very good if you have been partying the night before and have a hangover!
Welsh Rarebit: toast covered in melted cheese and any other ingredients you fancy, eg mustard, Worcestershire Sauce (a typical English flavouring).
Shepherd’s Pie: a pie of minced lamb and vegetables with mashed potatoes on top, cooked in the oven.
Cottage Pie: the same as the above, but with beef instead of lamb mince.
Lancashire Hotpot: a casserole of meat and vegetables, with sliced potatoes on top.
Cornish Pasty: a pastry case filled with beef, turnip, potato and onion. You can often buy them on the street.
Black pudding: a black sausage made of dried pig’s blood and fat (ugh – not my favourite! But tastes better than it sounds).
